The Lady or the Tiger

1. Analyze the following question in the first paragraph: Who came out of the opened door - the lady, or the tiger? Why? What textual evidence can be used to support your analysis?
I think she chose the tiger for her lover. I “This semi-barbaric king had a daughter as blooming as his most florid fancies, and with a soul as fervent and imperious as his own(part 3 paragraph 1).” Since she is also semi- barbaric like her father, I think her jealously and greed will be stronger than her love towards her lover. “The girl was lovely, but she had dared to raise her eyes to the loved one of the princess; and, with all the intensity of the savage blood transmitted to her through long lines of wholly barbaric ancestors, she hated the woman who blushed and trembled behind that silent door (part 4 paragraph 3)” As someone semi-barbaric, the princess would rather see her love die than with someone she hates.

2. In the second paragraph, discuss any type of literary elements you discovered in the story. Forget the literary elements? Look at the brief list to refresh your memory: plot structure, characterization (indirect or direct), figurative language, conflict, symbols, etc! How could you apply these elements to Frank Stockton's story?
Setting:Very olden time in a place where a semi-barbaric king ruled the country
Conflict: Princess, internal conflict: She has lost her love but she has a choice to kill him or give him to someone who she hates
Characterization: The author gives direct characterization for the princess' lover that he is very handsome and brave. The author also give direct characterization for the princess that she is like her father.
Symbolism: The doors that the princess can choose are symbolizing consequences the lover can face.
Plot Structure
Exposition/ Introduction: The author introduces the setting and characters
Rising action: The princess's lover loved the princess, but the king found out of it, and the lover had to go over trial. The choices that the prince can choose were both bad for the princess, because she lost him either way.
Climax: Princess picks a door for her love
Falling action and Resolution: Uses reader's imagination.

Elegy

Michael Jackson

The king of pop has left us forever
The world was sad
Some groups lost their idol
Other group of people lost their father

You were the idol of young musicians
You gave them a dream
And you gave them hope
To stand in stage

Your dance moves were fresh
The moon walk was phenomenal
Deceiving people’s eyes
When you just smoothly slide away

It is hard to express in simple words
The happiness and memories you brought
To this sad gloomy world
That is only full of conflict and war

Goodbye the king of pop
Even though your soul may have left Earth
Your songs and glory will live
In our hearts forever

Free verse, blank verse

Free verse
Baksetball

The basketball game was intense
The gym was heated with tension
The players were hungry for a win

The game started and baskets were made with a swish
Our game was like a football games
Hands flying everywhere, pushing,
The opponent and I were like lions and tigers fighting

It was the last play
We were behind by two
All we needed to do was shoot a three

Our ace got the ball
He went for the three
And it went in with a swoosh
and the crowd went crazy

Poetic devices: analogy, hyperbole, simile, onomatopoeia

Blank verse
Teachers absent

The hyper class was full of craziness
The teacher was absent for a meeting
The unfortunate sub had took in charge
The class was a crazy pack of monkeys
It was as loud as an amusement park
Some people were playing with their Macbooks
Others were talking with their friends all class
We have work to do by the end of class
But no one was even close to finish
As the clock goes tick tock tick tock tick tock

Villanelle assignment

I read "The Waking" by Theodore Roethke. This poem is about how someone's life is aging, realizing how close he is to death, and he is also learning things about life as he starts to age. In this poem, there were a lot of symbolism that I think was the main idea of the story. For example, sleep is symboling death in my opinion. The rhyme scheme of the villanelle was ABA throught out the poem and ABAB for the last stanza. I think that the main ideas of a villanelle are really empahsized because they get repeated numerous times in the poem.

Ballad Assignment

The Tables Turned
By William Wordsworth

Up! up! my friend, and clear your looks(A),
Why all this toil and trouble?(B)
Up! up! my friend, and quit your books,(A)
Or surely you'll grow double. (B)
The sun, above the mountain's head, ( C)
A freshening lustre mellow (D)
Through all the long green fields has spread, (C)
His first sweet evening yellow. (D)
Books! 'tis dull and endless strife, (E)
Come, here the woodland linnet, (F)
How sweet his music; on my life (E)
There's more of wisdom in it. (F)
And hark! how blithe the throstle sings! (G)
And he is no mean preacher; (H)
Come forth into the light of things, (G)
Let Nature be your teacher. (H)
She has a world of ready wealth ,
Our minds and hearts to bless--
Spontaneous wisdom breathed by health,
Truth breathed by chearfulness.
One impulse from a vernal wood
May teach you more of man;
Of moral evil and of good,
Than all the sages can.
Sweet is the lore which nature brings;
Our meddling intellect
Mishapes the beauteous forms of things;
--We murder to dissect.
Enough of science and of art;
Close up these barren leaves;
Come forth, and bring with you a heart
That watches and receives.

This ballad was a ballad that showed most of the characteristics very clearly. The rhyme scheme, the meter..I think that the rhyme scheme of this ballad is ABAB throughout the whole poem. It as easy to identify, because the verbs its self had rhyme not just its sound. I think the meter of this poem is 4343 throught the poem except for the first stanza. However I didn’t really find much repetition except for the first stanza.
The ballad was about nature. The word choice about nature that the author used was mostly appreciating, like sweet, beauteous, light, teacher. The ballad was also talking about resting from science and technology. He said put down your books, because nature can teach more than what scholars can explain. So I think the author is trying to tell us to go back to nature.

He's drinking cold corona
Feels like he's getting older
Now and noticing how he's finding
Grey hairs left in the shower
Tattoos fade by the hour
And he can’t understand these feelings

Why life is getting him down
He used to smile now he frowns
And cries inside
Its been this way for a while
And he can’t seem to put things right

When life has been unkind (A)
And you’re losing your mind (A)
Look in the mirror afraid of what you'll find (B)
Feels like time’s not on your side

He doesn’t like to mention (A)
Applying for his pension (A)
So his children don't know he's heading
Into a mid-life crisis
He can't afford the prices for
the new kitchen floor he’s buying

He's been a drunk all his life (A)
Two kids, a dog and a wife (A)
He doesn’t know (B)
And in the daytime he just sits and watches television shows (B)

When life has been unkind
And you’re losing your mind
Look in the mirror afraid of what you'll find
Feels like time’s not on your side

Don’t know why but somehow (A)
The ones you love you hate now,(A)
You feel down and blue (B)

Look at what you've thrown away(A)
They stood beside you all the way (A)
Now it's too late, it's too late for you (B)

When life has been unkind
And you’re losing your mind
Look in the mirror afraid of what you'll find
Feels like time’s not on your side

The modern song or ballad is “The Ballad of Paul K” by McFly. I didn’t pick the song because the title said it’s a ballad but because it is narrative, telling a story. The song is showing how sad aging is for the man. Who realizes that he is getting old and he isn’t able to do much to help his family.
This ballad doesn’t have a noticeable structure like many other modern ballads. There isn’t much rhyme scheme, and I can’t really find the meter in it. However they tell a story, a narrative, and they had repletion in the ballad.

My Ballad

War

While the generals stay in the back

The privates are staying in the trenches scared to death

Waiting for the first attack

They are holding their breath

The first bullet was shot

And the first solider had passed away

He lay in the spot

Only able to wait to decay

Soldiers making this disaster

With their heavy guns and barrels

They had became monsters

Killing anyone who can be imperil

People covered in despair

Realizing this is reality

The smell of blood vibrates in the air

This is true calamity

The most boring story

Old

I moved to a different apartment. So I cleaned the house. I cleaned for 2 days. My body hurt after the cleaning. there were a lot of things to clean. It took a lot of time and I didn’t like it. My family came to help but it still took a lot of time. I had no internet access so I couldn’t go on facebook or watch TV. the next day the moving company came they put our stuff together. We still had cleaning to do. The clothing and the little things came in a box we took the stuff out and put it on the couch. My couch is big so I can put all the clothes on. I try to help but I can’t because the other stuff was all the things for the kitchen did a lot of cleaning and I think our house looks better than before. After the cleaning I went to the skating rink I had a hard time finding the right skate size I tried on size 150 but it was small so I skated it hurt so I took my skates off and had a look at my foot and I saw it was bleeding on both sizes so I changed my skates to a 160 and it hurt less. And I watched avatar the movie it was so cool I think it is the best movie ever!!!

New

My two days that I moved was very tiring. Because we were moving to a new apartment, I had to clean my house for two long days. My body was sore after doing so much things. I abhorred cleaning my house. Even though my family came and help, it still took a lot of time. Because I didn’t even have internet connection, I couldn’t even do Facebook! I didn’t even get to watch TV, does that make sense for a teenage girl to be disconnected from society? I didn’t like it. The next day, the moving company came and helped pack and unpack our load together. We still had a lot of cleaning to do. SO I decided to organize my cloth by laying it on the large couch, the couch was so big that I could put all of my cloth on it. I tried to help clean other stuff, but I wasn’t really friendly with culinary materials and cleaning from a more experienced cleaner. The house looked better than ever after we cleaned our house. After we were done cleaning, we went skating, but it took me a long time to find the right size for my skates. I first tried on size 150, but after skating a lot, it hutted a lot. I took off my shoes to check was causing all this pain, but it was bleeding on both sides!! So I had to change my skates, and it didn’t hurt after. After we skated we watched the best movie ever, Avatar. It was awesome and wanted to see it again.
